Overview
THCV is one of the more unusual minor cannabinoids found in cannabis.
Structurally related to THC but pharmacologically distinct, tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) interacts with the endocannabinoid system in a dose-dependent way. At lower concentrations, research has demonstrated antagonist activity at the CB1 receptor—the same receptor strongly associated with many of Delta-9 THC’s characteristic effects. At higher exposures, its activity becomes more complex.
Our pure THCV is intended primarily as a formulation cannabinoid for custom blends, tinctures, capsules, edibles, and other cannabinoid products where a more functional profile is desired.
Rather than being used simply to increase total cannabinoid potency, THCV allows formulators to change the character of a blend.

THCV has affinity for both major cannabinoid receptors.
Laboratory research has found that it can act as a CB1 antagonist and exhibit partial agonist activity at CB2, although researchers caution that its real-world pharmacology is more complex than receptor studies alone suggest.
This unusual receptor profile is what makes THCV particularly interesting for cannabinoid formulation.
Clinical Research & Functional Profile
THCV remains an emerging cannabinoid, but several controlled human studies provide useful insight into its potential characteristics.
Low-Intoxication Profile
In a placebo-controlled human study, participants received 10mg of oral THCV daily for five days. THCV was well tolerated and was subjectively indistinguishable from placebo on its own.
When THC was subsequently administered, nine of ten participants reported that THC felt weaker or less intense after THCV, although THCV altered some THC effects in different directions and the researchers emphasized the small sample size.
This supports THCV's positioning as a cannabinoid that can behave very differently from conventional Delta-9 THC.
Brain Activity & Functional Signaling
A randomized double-blind study of healthy volunteers found that a single 10mg dose of THCV altered functional connectivity in brain networks associated with executive control and the default-mode network without producing significant changes in subjective experience.
Another controlled fMRI study found that THCV changed neural responses to both rewarding and aversive food stimuli while leaving participants' subjective ratings largely unchanged.
These findings are part of the reason THCV has attracted attention for functional rather than traditionally intoxicating cannabinoid formulations.
Metabolic Research
One of the better-known clinical trials evaluated THCV in people with type 2 diabetes.
Participants receiving 5mg THCV twice daily for 13 weeks showed reductions in fasting plasma glucose and changes in measures of pancreatic beta-cell function compared with placebo. THCV was also reported as well tolerated.
These findings are preliminary and do not establish THCV as a treatment for diabetes, weight loss, or metabolic disease. Larger clinical studies are still needed.
